Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is a type of therapy that helps people “see” unsettling, abusive, or traumatic event and subsequent memories in a new way to facilitate healing. The goal of therapy is to reduce psychological stress and move toward recovery by focusing on altering negative memories and images that are interrupting daily life.

EMDR is often used with people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety disorders. Sessions might include journaling, mindfulness, and calming activities.
